The middle school years can be tough on students. In addition to the physical and social changes they experience during this difficult period, preteens are transitioning from a traditional one-class environment to multiple classes and teachers.
Eighth grade is a critical defining point for students in the college planning process, according to Cynthia B. Schmeiser, president of ACT's Education Division. Academic benchmarks for students entering the ninth grade include:
English
- Read, comprehend, and recall material one to two grade levels above the current grade
- Read aloud about 150 words per minute with correct vocal expressions
- Write succinct text in genres including fiction, autobiography, research papers, and persuasive argument
- Use correct spelling and grammar
Math
- Master basic math concepts and pre-algebra
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals accurately
- Understand and be able to solve for the unknown (X) and solve two-step equations
- Be able to calculate squares and square roots
- Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing length of a side of a right triangle Recognize angle relationships, circle characteristics, and use geometric formulas to find perimeter, area, and circumference
Science
- Make observations and predictions based on prior understanding
- Use mathematical, logical, and sequential thinking to make observations and conclusions
- Use the four stages of problem solving: identify the problem, determine a solution, implement the solution, and evaluate the solution
- Understand the earth's structure and core, weather and climate change effects, and the role of the earth in the solar system
- Understand the diversity, development, and adaptations of organisms
History & Geography
- Understand mapping and how to use longitude and latitude coordinates
- Know major elements of American history like initial settlement and expansion, the effect on indigenous populations, and the manner by which the difficulties of European immigration were settled between these groups
- Be familiar with all prior U.S. wars from the Revolution through Persian Gulf and current conflicts in which the U.S. is involved Be familiar with the facts of the Great Depression and the impact of government policies on the U.S. and global economy
- Be able to converse on current affairs Understand the parts and processes of American government Be familiar with key presidential and influential figures both in the U.S. and worldwide Remember, this is a time when many students begin to feel overwhelmed and may start to withdraw.
Parents need to encourage their children in these early teen years and advocate for them by helping them work through fears and anxieties. Parents also need to emphasize the importance of organization and the ability for one to study and work independently.
