Using predictive models to examine the relative strengths of six factors in influencing student readiness, a recent ACT research paper reports that:
- Eighth grade academic achievement is the best predictor of college and career readines by high school graduation.
- Improvement in academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate high school than anything that happens in high school.
- Fewer than two in ten eighth graders are on target to be ready for college level work by the time they graduate high school.
