As a high school principal, I heard the senior song many times. Its my senior year, and I just want to have fun! First of all, I like fun and think every year should have some good times. As much as I believe that seniors are in a milestone year of their life, taking a holiday from work is a very dangerous game.
I have watched many a young adult lose out on opportunities due to their failure to finish strong. Remember, high school is a four-year adventure, not three. Employers and colleges are looking at your overall track record, especially your current behaviors. So, as your senior year rolls along, follow this advice:
The most important thing schools examine is your academic rigor. Resist the temptation to fill your schedule with easy courses, even in the last semester.
Next, stay on top of your grades to the end. It sounds simple, but Ive watched families have a miserable last month of high school because a good student got behind and had to scramble just to pass required classes.
Also, enjoy your friends in your last year. It is sometimes fashionable to check out, stop going to events, etc. Remember, adulthood comes fast enough. Have fun while you can.
Finally, say thank you to the adults who helped you along the way. High school is a great experience. Enjoy it all.
