Use Summer to Prepare for Fall ACT/SAT Exams

A common misconception is that ACT and SAT college entrance exams are IQ tests. "The tests do not measure intelligence; they measure academic abilities and reasoning skills," notes Mike Flynn, Tutoring Club's College Prep Specialist and former high school teacher with more than 20 years of test-prep experience. "The tests are knowledge based, and each requires a solid foundation in the fundamentals of mathematics (through Algebra II), vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills."

The purpose of entrance exams is to determine the probability that an incoming student will pass his or her first year courses. With that in mind, a good score matters. Limited openings are available in each incoming class, so the better an individual scores on the exams, the better chance he or she has of acceptance.

"Each test is different, and most colleges and universities will accept either. Many students do well by taking both tests and discovering which one better suits their abilities. Then they take that test a second time to achieve a higher score," comments Flynn.
