Education in the news (Summer 08)

Writing is the most common means of communication for today's adolescents. They are texting, messaging, blogging, and emailing. They are writing more now than ever before. The problem is, they aren’t writing well.

While students in 8th and 12th grade have increased scores in 'basic' writing skills, shows the National Assessment of Educational Progress, there are fewer students scoring 'proficient' on assessment tests, reports Education Week. Furthermore, most students believe they are insufficiently prepared in the formal writing skills they will need in the workforce and in college, finds the Pew Internet and American Life Project in a study on technology and its effect on adolescent behavior.

Parents can help their children develop writing skills by encouraging them to keep personal journals and write short stories or poems. Parents can help younger students by playing word games, completing word searches, or writing a family story with them. Naming animals from each letter of the alphabet helps younger children enjoy long car rides and stretch their knowledge.
"Games like these will help you see if your child is struggling with writing, vocabulary, or general knowledge," says Larry Schwartz, tutoring industry expert and founder of Tutoring Club. If you suspect your child's skills are only marginal, call Tutoring Club and inquire about enrollment in The Write Way program this summer. To learn more click here.
