The Importance of Reading for Fun

It's funny how learning takes place when you don't know it. Teachers talk often about the importance of reading, and they are right – the more you read, the better the skill develops. In fact, the more you interact with language in general, the better reader, writer, and speaker you become.

The secret is to disguise learning with things that our children enjoy. We don't need to immerse each child in Shakespeare to create a better reader. I've always advocated for the immersion into all language to stimulate development.

As a young person, I loved sports. I regularly read the sports page of the newspaper and magazines like Sports Illustrated. We don't always think of that as reading, but it counts. Believe it or not, sports stories are written at a high level, so if that is your thing, read.

Music is another great tool for strengthening reading skills. Young people's ability to read and interpret song lyrics is a great skill, and the speech patterns in songs are great exercises for emerging speakers. My point is, learning can be fun. Look at your daily habits, and discover the opportunities to grow that surround you every day.
