Seven Tips for Developing Healthy Minds

1. Encourage physical activity. Plan time for the whole family to be active together. Physical exercise is good for the brain and the body.

2. Be an academic role model. Limit passive, non-verbal activity such as watching TV and playing video games. Instead, schedule time to read together. Reading is a great exercise for the mind. It helps improve vocabulary and strengthen comprehension. Discuss with your children what they are reading to increase their comprehension and creative imagination.

3. Teach respect. Practice the Golden Rule. Teach your children to treat others the way they want to be treated.

4. Assign responsibilities. Give your child household tasks. Completing chores builds responsibility and accountability.

5. Eat together. Children who regularly eat dinner with their parents where there is open conversation have a lower risk of smoking, drinking and doing illicit drugs as teenagers. They also have more open communication when problems arise.

6. Encourage a positive attitude. Accentuate the positive instead of the negative. Praise your child for a job well done, and let them know you will listen to them and love them no matter what. Although negative topics must be discussed, the emphasis should be on how to change the negative to a positive.

7. Set academic expectations. Set academic goals that are high, but not impossible to achieve. Most important, be available to help your child when needed. Children who have more expected of them from involved parents achieve higher test scores than children with less parental involvement.
