Inspire With Hope
Motivate With Love
As a 16-year old football player, I was paralyzed in a water skiing accident in 1977. My dreams shattered, I was faced with a future for which I hadn’t planned. The world looked very large and I didn’t have the tools to go forward. While in intensive care one of my coaches came to see me and asked me a question I’ll never forget, “How many wins have you had today?” Strangely enough, he asked me that question every day for 2 years. At some point, I answered him with a highlight from that particular day. That exchange became a daily ritual that I use today. Coach taught me a specific skill to help me deal with the magnitude of life.
Many of our young people see school the way I saw the world from intensive care. The work is too hard, the end is not in sight, and they fall further and further behind. It’s easy to see hopelessness set in with our children, because they don’t see school as a place where success is possible. So what can a parent do to help? You can start by talking to your children every day. Instead of asking them what they did that day (we all know the answer to that), ask them, “How many wins did you have today?” Continue to ask them until they learn the routine for themselves. You will assume the role of Coach and be your family’s merchant of hope.
