What is the International Baccalaureate Organization?

The Programme was established in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 and is governed by an elected council with a curriculum board that oversees the development of the study areas and examination. The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a registered foundation under Swiss law.

The IBO currently offers three programmes:

• The Primary Years Programme (PYP)
• The Middle Years Programme (MYP)
• The Diploma Programme (DP)

The three programmes share many educational principles. Each programme is intended to promote:

• the education of the whole person
• emphasize the importance of a broad and balanced education
• international understanding • responsible citizenship
• the importance of learning how to learn, of student-centered inquiry and communication

The attributes and descriptors of the IB Learner Profile define the type of learner the IBO hopes to develop through its programmes. IB learners strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective.
