Home FAQs What is a CTE Articulation Credit Agreement?

What is a CTE Articulation Credit Agreement?

Articulation is a specific agreement between a high school career/technical (CTE) program and Front Range Community College. Students completing articulation requirements in their high school programs earn FRCC college credits in their CTE field. These credits are not designed to transfer to colleges other than FRCC.

What is an Articulation Agreement?
An Articulation Agreement is a specific agreement between an individual high school or school district and Front Range Community College. Articulation Agreements are only applicable to Career/Technical Education (CTE) programs.

How is an Articulation Agreement made?
FRCC faculty meet with the high school teachers and review the curriculum that is taught in the high school. This is compared to entry level courses at FRCC in the CTE program and the number of credits awarded is based on the curriculum matches.

How is it possible that I could have college credit when I took the class in high school?
CTE programs at the beginning levels are very specific to task, for example, when you learn the basics in a CTE program the techniques do not change between high school and college levels. Here are some examples:

  • Welders learn to "lay a bead" and "strike an arc"
  • Automotive Techs learn to balance a tire and perform maintenance on an engine
  • Computer applications
  • Marketing concepts
  • Accounting debits and credits

Why should I continue at FRCC in this career path?
The more education and technical expertise you possess means the more economic power you have in the work force. Many studies have shown that persons who have post-secondary education enjoy higher wages and income over those who only have high school (secondary) education.

Do these credits apply to other community colleges or technical schools?
No, the Articulation Agreements only apply at FRCC.

Once I have been awarded the credits at FRCC can I transfer them to another school?
No, the credits are specific to FRCC.

Do I need to get a specific grade in my CTE high school class?
Yes, Articulation Agreements have grade requirements, these may vary depending on the agreement with your specific program. To find out the requirements for your agreement, click here.

I took several courses at my high school in my CTE program, but the Articulation Agreement only shows credit for two classes. Is this correct?
Yes, FRCC credit is not awarded based on time spent, but rather on specific curriculum outcomes at the college. These outcomes may be spread across several courses at your high school or skill sets may need to be repeated and honed to reach and equivalent level of rigor at the college.

I completed a CTE program, but I don't see an agreement with my high school. I do see an agreement for the same program with another high school, can I use that one?
No, agreements are specific to the high school or school district. It is possible that an agreement for a CTE program exists in one school and not another.

My HS does not have an Articulation Agreement with FRCC for the program I am in, but I would still like to earn college credit. Is there a way to do that?
If you feel you have the skills and techniques that are offered in a college course, you may request an Institutional Challenge Exam through Credit for Prior Learning. The Articulation Agreements are school specific and you cannot use them interchangeably.

Is it important that I complete the entire CTE program at my high school for the Articulation Agreement to work?
Agreements vary with programs and schools, check the agreement to see the course equivalencies. Often a series of courses must be successfully completed in order to be awarded credit with FRCC.

How does articulated credit apply to the degree or certificate that I want to earn?
Articulated credit may be applied to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Associate of General Studies (AGS), and/or a Certificate in your career/technical area. At least 50% of the credits required for a certificate must be earned at FRCC.

What classes do I enroll in at FRCC?
First, it is important to have your HS transcript evaluated in order for FRCC to award credit within the guidelines of the Articulation Agreement. Follow the steps in #14 to accomplish this. Next, you will want to discuss your individual situation with an Academic Advisor for recommendations on potential certificates and degrees.
