Four of Fremont’s five major western expeditions went through Colorado, at times passing near Longmont. Fremont was brave, adventurous, and a good mapmaker; but perhaps most importantly he married well. His father-in-law was one of the nation’s most influential senators and his wife was an excellent writer. Fremont got unique assignments and the nation learned of his accomplishments through first rate written reports. Historians may differ on the interpretation of Fremont’s accomplishments, but none can deny that his is a unique story in the development of the West.
