I Can’t Believe This Is Happening!
Activity# 7228.200 Date: Wednesday, March 3 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Cost: FREE, registration required
Sadly, thousands of older Americans are victims each year of physical harm, emotional abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect. Harder to imagine is that such abuse is often committed by family members, caregivers, and others that the victim knows and trusts. Why does this happen? Why is this behavior rarely reported to the police? What can I do about it, and what are the specific risk factors in later life? Participants will learn the answers to these questions and more, including how to recognize the signs of abuse and what community resources are available.
Presenters: Keith Carr works as an Adult Protection caseworker for Boulder County Dept. of Housing and Human Services and has been there for 11 years. Keith is a member of the Boulder County Elder Justice Project training team.
Marti Hopper, Ph.D. works for Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), Boulder County’s rape crisis center, where she conducts community education programs. She holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology with over 30 years of experience in adult education. Marti has served for 5 years on Boulder County’s Elder Abuse Task Force, which has worked to bring awareness and solutions to issues of abuse in later life. She is a member of the Boulder County Elder Justice Project training team.
