If you come to listen, that’s fine; if you come to hear, that’s great. The finest of the Three Sorrowful Tales, The Children of Lir, is bound to wring your heart. From the Fenian cycle, Oisin in Tir na nOg is a fine traditional heroic tale, as is Finn MacCool, Faolain, and the Bride for Oscar. The Tain Bo Cuailnge, centerpiece of the eighth-century Ulster cycle of heroic tales, is Ireland’s great prose epic, the hero of which is Cu Chulainn, the Hound of Ulster, whose boyhood deeds make lively telling. Which one(s) of all this menu you’ll hear will be settled by some sort of quasi-democratic dictate. Instructor: Francis Lovett.
