During this program, Professor Francis Lovett will give you an overview of three of Irelands most famous heroes and monks. Tara’s Halls: No Irish site is so charged with legendary and historic associations as the Hill of Tara. Tara of the Kings, as it is spoken even now, was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland. One hundred
forty-two kings are said to have reigned there in prehistoric and historic times. The Gold of Heroes: The rich and highly ornamented attire worn by the heroes of the ancient tales, were not mere fantasies. The National Museum of Ireland houses hundreds of torcs and brooches, rings and bracelets and girdles, mostly of solid gold and some of them dating back five thousand years. Skellig Michael, Monastery in the Sky: At the same time as masterpieces of metalworking were taking shape in some Irish workshops, and scribes were painting pages of vellum that would be wonders for ages to come, a handful of monks at the other extreme of the existential scale were scraping a living off a rock in the Atlantic.
